Painting on the Go

Before my stroke, my work used to involve a lot of travel.

As you can imagine during my recovery I've been medically grounded and just been working from home and the local office.

Part of my stroke recovery was to stop drinking alcohol; not that my beer a week was a huge amount to start with, and also stopped trying to eat food that I haven't prepared myself to limit the amount of sodium I intake per day.

That also means that on any future business trip I'll not be hanging out with my team members at the pub for very long once we close out the day.

I had been thinking of what I can do now to occupy my time in the hotel room besides flipping through the TV.

The hardest part about going away on trips is missing my family, and of course my bucket O'paints.

I am leaving for a business trip tomorrow and wanted to continue to paint my KD:M starting survivors.  Tough to do from across the country.

I was thinking about how I could safely transport some of my gear with me and thought about those converted Altoid tins that some water colorists use to hold a selection of paints when they go out to paint landscapes.

My requirements were that it needed to be small and compact and could take some paint and protect precious miniatures from Air Travel.

Here is what I came up with after digging around the house for a bit.

Paint and Miniature Transport

Pelican 1120 Case - Donated to me by my good buddy.

In the left hand side of the case I plucked space to hold paint.  On this trip I'm going be painting skin tones onto my KD:M miniatures.  I've brought several triads of colour, thinner medium and a Reikland Fleshshade from GW.  On the right hand side I've made little pockets to carry 28mm miniatures.  The middle cross divider is currently attached but I think could be easily removed to accommodate a larger model.  Depending on how this test trip goes I may try to magnetize some spots in the case to better secure the miniatures.  I think I would always bring this case as Carry-on but as its a Pelican case it probably would survive being checked.  I don't know if I would survive though, if it were lost as luggage.

The Vallejo paints just barely fit making the lid a very tight squeeze to shut.  Might have to create a basics colour set of P3 or citadel paint pots later.  Time will tell I guess!

Palette

In my pantry I found two suitable tins that could be up-cycled as a palette.

Simpkins Travel Sweets

Herbal Candy Tin from Chinatown

And so I did!

Am I sponge worthy?

Inside I just wadded up some paper towel.  I'll end up getting a sponge in the future, and then cut some semi circular pieces of parchment paper.  The Purple tin fits inside the Mulled Wine tin so I could bring both or just end up taking the small one if space is a concern.

All Dressed Up and Ready to go!

I'll keep you posted on how usable this setup is!

Flashpoint Painting Diary

I hope that everyone had a chance to decompress during the holidays and recharge your batteries for 2018.  My Christmas was full of family stuff and I was hoping to get some more board gaming in but alas I succumbed to a nasty flu virus and was knocked out for 4 days. Anyhow before any of that happened I managed to make some progress on the miniatures for Flashpoint.   When we left each other last you saw a preview of the HAZMAT Operator: Colour Diary When ever I am going create a painting diary post I am going to list the colours so that, if you at home someday are reading this blog you can follow along.  Citadel Paints are easily found in most Gaming Stores and if you are in a large city and have a Games Workshop they would carry the full line.  When I started painting I bought a lot of Citadel paints, but about 4 months in I switched over to Vallejo because it comes in a dropper bottle.  Let me tell you how much easier it is to work ...

Galaxy Trucker

Smokey and the Bandit in SPAAAAACEE Happy New Years to you all! Galaxy Trucker is an amazing game from well known designer Vlaada Chvatil.  Vlaada has brought to the table such games as Mage Knight, Star Trek Frontiers, Codenames, Through the Ages, and of course this game. In Galaxy Trucker, each player receives a tableau board in order to build a space ship. In the middle of the table within reach of all the players a very large pile of tokens all face down is created.  Reminds me a bit like Mah Jong without the clackity clack clack. Once ready, a sand timer is started and with only one hand and one tile at a time everyone makes a mad dash to flip over tiles.  You then decide if you want to keep that tile and connect it to your base module.  If not, you return the tile back into the common area face up this time and it becomes free grabs for any of the other players to use.  Connectors must match on both sides of the tile once set and you rea...
