Growing up I used to have a itty bitty tv in my room in late 90s. We're talking about a 10 inch CRT TV that had a VHS tape player in the bottom. It had a handle on the top and today could pass as a wicked 30lb. kettle bell in a cross fit gym. Sorry for the old man flashback.
What does this have to do with board games? Well today that TV's function in my room is now an old no-TouchID iPad and, instead of shows like Star Trek TNG and Buffy the Vampire Slayer on cable TV it's Youtube.
Much hours are wasted on this passion. Cooking, travel, challenge eating, gaming, board gaming, people failing, people winning, you can see it all!
One of my favorite channels is Geek and Sundry and, on that channel a little show called Tabletop, hosted by one of the boys from the Stand By Me movie. The very first episode I watched was when they played Tokaido. It's not a very complex game but the art, presentation and theme is amazing. I was instantly pulled in and this game was my first purchase at my Friendly Local Game Store(FLGS). Yes, Wil Wheaton the influencer influenced me to buy the game...
You are a traveler, travelling from the old capital of Kyoto all the way to Edo on the most important of the Five Roads. This road is called....Tokaido!
At it's heart, the game is all about set collecting different things on your journey. Your goal is to collect sets of souvenirs, eat the best food, go to hot springs, meet NPC travelers, donate at the temple etc etc. At the end of the Journey you will calculate all your Victory Points and have a winner. This is a great gateway game for people that are not really into board games or as a board game night filler/pregame tune up. The total time play time is around 30 mins.
Like many games today this one was a Kickstarter. Although I missed out on it I did manage to find earlier this year the collectors edition contents, and last week the Matsuri expansion miniatures. The standard player markers in this game are meeples.
The Collectors Edition add on and the Matsuri Miniature Pack replace the meeples with 3D models of your character.
The theme of Tokaido is quite fitting - A Journey. Like the travelers in the game setting out from Kyoto I will embrace my inner Hiroshige and paint my way to Edo. I am bit intimidated by the bright colors and being able to replicate them. My learning goal is to figure out two brush blending in the process. (I guess I will have to change the name of the blog if I do!)
Stay tuned friends!
