GKR: Heavy Hitters

It's HAPSI TIME!

Have you ever watched a movie called: The Lord of the Rings, District 9, Bladerunner 2049, Ghost In the Shell, Mad Max: Fury Road, and The Hobbit?  What is one thing that these films have in common besides theme?

They all had special effects and props done by the wonderful folks at Weta Workshop out of New Zealand.

Those crazy talented folks who named their business after a type of Grasshopper native to NZ; a Weta!

What does this have to do with boardgames?  Well what do you get when you combine the talent and imagination of Weta with giant mechs pitted in arena combat?  You get Giant Killer Robots (GKR)!

Weta has teamed up with boardgame manufacturer Cryptozoic Entertainment to bring GKR: Heavy Hitters.   A game for 2-4 players where you fight for your Corporate Sponsor for the right to destroy buildings and each other.  The games mechs are amazing looking; not surprising coming from the teams that brought you District 9 and Ghost in the Shell.

The world of the future is an incredibly Corporate place...maybe halfway to Idiocracy; wait that's today.  ok 3/4 of the way to Idiocracy.

President Camacho sez to drink more Brawndo!  It's got what you need!

Similar in the GKR World we have  Hapsi, Supalax, Bad Taco and Pink Elephant!

At the start of each turn your Heavy Hitter has 5 Energy to spend; you can get into the negative with consequences, which allow you to spawn assist bots or play weapon cards.  The number on the card dictates the speed of the weapon with the higher the number getting initiative.  Two attack dice are rolled and if you meet the condition you make a successful attack.  The defender gets the ability to roll defence dice to try to take the edge off of it.

Your deck is your Mech's life, as you take damage you discard cards into your damage pile until all is lost.  That however is not the only way to win.  If you end your movement beside a building you get to tag it; some weapons such as the paint gun also can do it in other phases.  Once you tag a building with 4 of your corporate color,  you demolish the building and claim it for your side.  Do that 4 times and you win!

I'll post a battle report soon I'm sure!

Unboxing!

First order of business to get those Merc's unbent and painted up.  Stay tuned for a GKR Painting Journal!

Unless I get distracted...

Flashpoint Painting Diary

I hope that everyone had a chance to decompress during the holidays and recharge your batteries for 2018.  My Christmas was full of family stuff and I was hoping to get some more board gaming in but alas I succumbed to a nasty flu virus and was knocked out for 4 days. Anyhow before any of that happened I managed to make some progress on the miniatures for Flashpoint.   When we left each other last you saw a preview of the HAZMAT Operator: Colour Diary When ever I am going create a painting diary post I am going to list the colours so that, if you at home someday are reading this blog you can follow along.  Citadel Paints are easily found in most Gaming Stores and if you are in a large city and have a Games Workshop they would carry the full line.  When I started painting I bought a lot of Citadel paints, but about 4 months in I switched over to Vallejo because it comes in a dropper bottle.  Let me tell you how much easier it is to work ...

Magic Maze

Don't let yourself get attached... ...to anything that you are not willing to walk out on in 30 seconds flat if you feel the heat around the corner. Nominated in 2017 for the Spiel des Jahres; losing out to Kingdomino.  Magic Maze is a co-operative realtime heist game for 1-8 players.   In the game you are a band of adventurers who has lost all their stuff!  How can a Barbarian slay without Steel?  Can a Dwarf and an Elf have a orc slaying competition without an Axe and a Bow?  And our poor Mage without components you just have a nice squishy target.  So what do you do?  You embrace your inner Mallrat, engage in some shop lifting and then try to escape the mall without getting caught . The game features some cool game mechanics.  Because there are only 4 pawns everyone controls all the pawns.  What happens is that at the beginning of the game the starting map tile is placed on the table with the 4 pawns on it....
